The Village Girl Initiative in Lewis Center, Ohio began with our founder's personal experiences in The Gambia, especially those relating to people who live in rural villages. The suffering of women and girls in this area has motivated her to do something and let people know how they can help out and give back to these people in those villages to help them live full and prosperous lives. We work directly with individuals and organizations who want to help. Our goal is to completely eradicate Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C); eliminate obstacles such as inadequacy, inaccessibility, and unaffordability that prevent people, especially women and children from receiving primary and basic health care services in Sanyang and its surrounding villages in the Kombo, South District of The Gambia. In addition, we are working to provide tuition scholarships for village girls from middle schools through high schools and universities, and empowering them to become agents of change in their communities to help end Female Genital Mutilation.
